What Juneteenth commemorates

On June 19, 1865, Union troops announced in Galveston, Texas, that enslaved people there were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had taken effect. The date became known as Juneteenth, and for generations Black communities, first in Texas and then across the country, have marked it with celebrations of freedom, family and resilience. In 2021 it became a federal holiday, Juneteenth National Independence Day.

Today the day brings together reflection on history and joy in freedom. Many people attend local events, gather with family, visit museums and historic sites, or support Black-owned businesses. When the date falls on a weekend, the federal holiday is observed on the nearest weekday, and the date shown on this page reflects that.

The Starburst Celebration artwork

The Starburst Celebration style is bright and uplifting. Your pet sits in the golden light of a summer evening while a brilliant starburst, a new star, rises over the horizon. The sky glows in red, white and blue, echoing the colors and the bursting star of the Juneteenth flag. The scene contains no people, just your pet and a sky full of light.

Adding a name

Add your pet's name or a short line in the text step. Our software typesets the words after the image is created, so they appear exactly as you write them.

Picking a photo

Choose a picture where your pet's face is well lit and in focus, ideally taken outdoors in the evening or by a bright window. The warm light in the artwork suits photos with soft, natural light, and our pet photography pointers explain how to get one.

Ways to share it

Share the portrait with family on the day, or place it at the top of an invitation to a backyard gathering. A framed print brings the summer colors into a living room, and the digital file makes a bright phone wallpaper for the season. If your household marks Juneteenth each year, a new portrait can become part of that tradition.

Celebrating in your community

Look for Juneteenth events near you, such as festivals, parades, readings and museum programs. Many are family-friendly, and some outdoor events welcome well-behaved dogs, though it is worth checking first. On hot June days, keep pets in the shade with plenty of water.

Questions about Juneteenth portraits

What does Juneteenth commemorate?

Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, the news that enslaved people were free was announced in Galveston, Texas, and Black communities have celebrated the date ever since. It became a federal holiday in 2021 as Juneteenth National Independence Day.

Why does the artwork use a starburst?

The bursting star and the red, white and blue colors echo the Juneteenth flag, which uses a star and a burst of light to stand for freedom and a new beginning. Our design borrows that motif for a hopeful summer scene, with your pet in the warm evening glow.

Are there people in the Juneteenth artwork?

No. The scene shows only your pet, the horizon and the starburst sky. We keep people out of this design on purpose, so the image stays joyful and respectful without depicting anyone, and the focus remains on the colors and meaning of the day.

Can I get the portrait before June 19?

The digital file, yes. Most portraits are ready within an hour of payment. Busy periods or complex scenes can take longer. A print needs more time, because it is made by our print partner after you approve a proof and then shipped, so order well ahead if you want it on the wall for the day. Delivery options and times are listed at checkout.

Is the artwork created by AI?

Yes. The starburst, the evening sky and your pet are generated together by AI after payment, following the Starburst Celebration style we designed. We aim for a faithful likeness of markings and eye color, but AI results vary and cannot be guaranteed, so 2 extra versions are included.
