Stars and Poppies Tribute Portraits

A quiet tribute at dusk

This is a still, respectful portrait made for Memorial Day. Your pet sits calmly beside a neatly folded American flag, with red poppies growing close by and the last soft light of dusk fading across the sky. The painting is restrained and gentle: muted colour, low warm light on the face, deep blue evening shadows and a sense of stillness. Nothing in the scene is playful or loud.

Simple choices

The options are deliberately few. Your pet can wear their own collar, a plain collar with a small sprig of red poppies, or a plain navy neckerchief. For the setting, choose a wooden bench at dusk, the edge of a poppy field under an evening sky, a quiet front porch in the glow of a porch light, or a simple dark backdrop with a single poppy.

Who it is for

Memorial Day, on the last Monday in May, is set aside to remember the men and women who died while serving in the US armed forces. This style is for families who mark the day quietly at home, for military families remembering someone they lost, and for anyone who wants a calm image to share on the day rather than a festive one. The red poppy, long worn in remembrance of the war dead, gives the portrait its focus. Read more on our Memorial Day portraits page.

It can also be a meaningful keepsake of a pet who was much loved by someone who served.

Choosing a photo

A clear, well-lit photo of your pet sitting calmly works best, since the pose is still and upright. The face should be in focus, with the eyes visible. A slightly older photo is fine if it is the one that matters most. Our photo guidance explains how to choose between several pictures.

Words and printing

If you add words, keep them brief and personal: a name, a pair of dates or a short line such as "In grateful remembrance". The text is set by our software after the artwork is made, so names and dates are spelled exactly as you enter them, and you can check them in the live preview. A framed print in a dark frame suits the tone.

For Veterans Day, which thanks those who served, see the service hero portrait. To remember a pet who has died, our pet memorial portrait is the gentler choice.
