A crown of blossom for the first days of May
May Day has been celebrated on English village greens for centuries with maypoles, garlands and flower crowns, and this style borrows all of it for your pet. They wear a crown woven from hawthorn blossom, cowslips and forget-me-nots, with a maypole behind them streaming coloured ribbons, apple blossom on the trees and the soft green of late spring all around. The painting is fresh and folk-tale bright, with fine detail in the petals and a gentle glow of afternoon sun.
Crowns and garlands
Choose a full flower crown, a lighter daisy chain, a garland of spring flowers trailing pastel ribbons, or a collar of apple blossom for pets who would rather nothing sat on their head. Every option is placed around the ears rather than over them.
Settings
The default scene is a village green with a maypole, but you can also choose an apple orchard in full blossom, a country lane lined with flowering hawthorn hedges, or a cottage garden gate wreathed in spring flowers.
Who it suits
It suits anyone who loves the English countryside, keen gardeners, folk music fans and families who head to a May fair on the bank holiday. It is a gentle, pretty gift for a spring birthday, too. Horses and ponies look magnificent in a flower crown, as do goats, sheep, rabbits and long-haired cats, and a spaniel's ears frame a garland beautifully.
The Early May bank holiday falls on the first Monday in May; our May Day bank holiday page shows the next date and more seasonal ideas.
Choosing a photo
Pick a photo with the whole head visible, including the tops of the ears, so the crown has somewhere natural to sit. Outdoor photos in soft daylight suit the spring colours best. For a horse or pony, a head-and-shoulders shot over a stable door or fence works well. Two pets can share the green; upload a photo of each. See our advice on choosing photos for more.
Text and printing
Add your pet's name in a flowing script, perhaps with a title like "Queen of the May". Our software adds the lettering after the artwork is made, so it is always spelled correctly. Framed prints and canvases bring out the blossom colours. For a crown in a wider field of flowers, compare the flower meadow portrait, or see every holiday style in one place.
The flowers, ribbons and village green are created by AI around your photo. Crown your pet for May Day.
About this style
Will the flower crown hide my pet's ears?
No. The crown is placed around and between the ears so their shape and position stay recognisable. For pets with very large or floppy ears, a lighter daisy chain or the apple blossom collar can look more natural. Include the top of the head in your photo so the crown sits convincingly.
Can a horse or pony wear the crown?
Yes, and they suit it particularly well. The crown is scaled to the head and sits just behind the ears or across the forelock. A clear head-and-shoulders photo in daylight works best. You can also choose the orchard or hawthorn lane setting if a village green feels too small for a pony.
Are there people dancing round the maypole?
No. The maypole stands on the green with its ribbons streaming in the breeze, but no dancers or other people are shown, so the focus stays on your pet. If you would like a scene without the maypole, choose the orchard, hawthorn lane or cottage garden setting instead.
Is this only for the May bank holiday?
Not at all. The style is a spring scene, so it works for birthdays, Mother's Day gifts or simply a pretty portrait for the kitchen wall at any time of year. The flowers shown are those of late spring, which gives the picture a fresh, gentle feel.
