Captain on deck
This style puts your pet in command of a tall ship. They stand at a polished wooden wheel in a navy double-breasted coat with brass buttons and a peaked captain's hat, while white sails fill overhead and blue-green waves roll past the rail. A brass compass glints beside them, and spray catches the afternoon light. The painting borrows from classic maritime art, with rich oil textures, dramatic skies and a strong sense of movement in the sea.
Uniforms and sea gear
Choose the navy captain's coat and hat, a yellow oilskin coat and sou'wester for stormy weather, a cream cable-knit fisherman's sweater with a captain's cap, or a striped sailor top with a red neckerchief.
Settings at sea
Stay at the ship's wheel under full sail, head into stormy seas with crashing waves, stand on a rocky shore with a lighthouse behind and a ship on the horizon, or settle into a wooden captain's cabin full of brass instruments and rolled charts. Charts and flags are painted without words or emblems.
Who it suits
The second Monday in October is Columbus Day, a federal holiday that many states and cities also observe as Indigenous Peoples' Day. This style keeps to the sea itself: it does not depict any explorer, voyage or historical figure, just your pet in charge of a fine ship. Our Columbus Day portrait ideas page has more on the day.
Beyond the holiday, it is a good fit for sailors, boat owners, coastal families and anyone retiring after a life at sea. Newfoundlands, Labradors and Portuguese water dogs have the right sea legs, but cats with a commanding stare, parrots and even tortoises make memorable captains.
Choosing a photo
A clear, forward-facing or three-quarter photo with the top of the head visible lets the captain's hat sit naturally. Good daylight helps the coat colours come through against the sea. Our photography guide has more suggestions.
Text and printing
Add a name and rank, such as "Captain Juniper", in an engraved font beneath the scene. Our software sets it after the artwork is made, so it is spelled exactly as you enter it. Framed prints in a dark wood frame suit the maritime mood. For a uniform on dry land, see the military general style, or browse every holiday portrait.
The ship, the sails and the sea are all created by AI from your photo. Make your pet the captain.
About this style
Does the artwork show Christopher Columbus or his ships?
No. The style shows only your pet as a sea captain aboard a tall ship of a general nineteenth-century kind. It does not depict Columbus, any other explorer or any real voyage, and the flags and charts carry no emblems or words. It is a celebration of seafaring and the open sea.
Will the captain's hat sit on my pet's ears?
The hat is placed on top of the head, between or just behind the ears, so their shape stays recognisable. Pets with very large upright ears can look more natural in the striped sailor top, which needs no hat. Include the top of the head in your photo so any hat has room to sit properly.
Can my parrot be the captain?
Yes, and parrots make particularly good captains. The style works for birds, reptiles and small pets as well as dogs and cats, with the coat and hat scaled to the body. For a bird, a photo showing the head and chest clearly, with the feathers in good light, gives the best result.
Is this a good present for someone who sails?
Yes. It suits sailors, boat owners, retired mariners and coastal families, and works well for a retirement, a birthday or a new boat. You can add the pet's name with a rank, or even the boat's name, as text, which is set by our software after the artwork is made.
